World War I was generally a struggle between the ideals of the past in Europe and the emerging total industrialization and enlightenment.
Germany, Austria/Hungary, Russia, the Ottoman Empire, and even Italy had wide spread revolutions that were not successful in the mid 1800's. These countries tended to retain their monarchical and antiquated ideals of the 16th and 17th centuries. In France, Britain, and most other countries of Northwestern Europe the political ideals of the French Revolution coupled with rising industrialization created a politically active middle class who achieved modest gains in affairs of state. Since the family ties of the ruling European Empires were so close, the
assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand set off the war. It was not the cause, but those family ties and complex alliances brought most European nations into the war.
